What pushes the price up
Solar Choice says its prices cover a basic installation and that difficult or more complex installs may cost more (Solar Choice). Common extras to ask about as separate quote lines:
- a switchboard upgrade
- a long cable run to the garage or driveway, or trenching
- a three-phase supply upgrade
- apartment or strata installs, which Solar Choice notes have different costs.
We couldn't find an authoritative published price for each of these extras, so we don't quote one. Get itemised quotes.
Do you need a wall charger?
The Victorian Government says a standard power point meets most people's daily driving needs, and lists a 10A socket as adding roughly 14–21 km of range per hour, versus about 42–65 km per hour for a 7 kW single-phase wall charger (Victorian Government). Most Victorian houses are single-phase.
Melbourne and Victoria: installation rules
- Use a licensed electrician working for a Registered Electrical Contractor, who must give you a Certificate of Electrical Safety (Energy Safe Victoria).
- We found no current Victorian Government rebate for home EV chargers as at 20 October 2026. Check energy.gov.au before you buy.
Rebates and loans elsewhere
- NSW: the Home Energy Saver program offers zero-interest loans that include EV chargers, subject to eligibility (NSW Government).
- ACT: the Sustainable Household Scheme offers low-interest loans for eligible upgrades (ACT Government FAQs).
- Programs change often. See the national list at energy.gov.au.
On a novated lease?
The ATO says a home charging station is not a car expense, so the EV FBT exemption doesn't cover it (ATO). See Novated Lease inclusions.
